What is a discovery call?

Definition

A discovery call is an early sales conversation in which the rep learns the prospect's situation, problems, priorities and buying process, to decide together whether a deal is worth pursuing.

Why it matters

Everything later in a deal builds on discovery. The demo is only relevant if it shows the problems the customer named, the proposal only lands if it is sized to the cost of those problems, and the forecast is only honest if the rep knows who decides and by when. A weak discovery call rarely looks weak on the day; it shows up weeks later as a stalled deal.

Good discovery calls have a recognisable shape: the customer talks more than the rep, the rep asks open questions and follows up on the answers, and the call ends with an agreed next step rather than “I’ll send you some information”.

Example

At 11:30 in a discovery call, the prospect says: “We lose about two orders a week because quotes go out late.” The rep does not jump to the product. They ask: “What is one of those orders worth to you?” The answer, a few thousand euros each, turns a vague annoyance into a number the customer’s finance team will recognise. The rep writes it down, and it becomes the first line of the business case.

How Drummer handles it

Drummer recognises a discovery call as its own call type and scores it against the scorecard your team uses for discovery: the discovery call template, MEDDIC, SPIN or your own. Each criterion gets a score, the reasoning and the timestamp that proves it. The conversation metrics, such as the talk-to-listen ratio and question rate, are compared with discovery benchmarks rather than demo benchmarks.

After the call, the rep’s AI twin updates the CRM with the contacts, pain, next steps and qualification fields, and drafts the follow-up email in the language of the call, ready to send after one click.

Give every rep a day back, starting next week.

Thirty minutes, on your own calls and your own CRM. No migration, nothing for your reps to learn.
