What is SPIN selling?
SPIN selling is a sales questioning method from Neil Rackham that moves a buyer through four types of question: Situation, Problem, Implication and Need-payoff, so they state the value themselves.
Why it matters
Neil Rackham described SPIN in his 1988 book SPIN Selling, based on research into what successful salespeople did differently in large, complex sales. The finding that stuck: in big deals, asking the right questions in the right order matters more than pitching.
The four question types:
- Situation: facts about the buyer’s current setup.
- Problem: difficulties and dissatisfaction with that setup.
- Implication: the consequences of those problems, on cost, time, risk or people.
- Need-payoff: the value of solving them, put into words by the buyer.
Implication questions are the ones most reps skip. They turn a small annoyance into a business case, and need-payoff questions let the buyer make the argument instead of the rep.
Example
On a discovery call with a kitchen showroom, the rep asks about the current quoting process (situation). At 09:40 the owner says quotes often take a week (problem). At 13:15 the rep asks, “What happens to a couple while they wait a week for a quote?” The owner pauses: “Some of them visit the showroom down the road in the meantime” (implication).
At 15:02 the rep asks, “What would it be worth to send the quote the same evening?” The owner answers that even two more signed kitchens a month would cover it (need-payoff). The buyer has built the business case in their own words.
How Drummer handles it
Drummer scores every call against a SPIN scorecard automatically. It checks which question types the rep asked, with the reasoning and the timestamp of each, so a manager can see at a glance that a rep stays in situation questions and never reaches implication. The question rate and talk ratio metrics show whether the buyer got room to answer.

Give every rep a day back, starting next week.
Thirty minutes, on your own calls and your own CRM. No migration, nothing for your reps to learn.
