What is SPICED?

Definition

SPICED is a customer-centric discovery framework from Winning by Design that structures a sales conversation around five elements: Situation, Pain, Impact, Critical event and Decision.

Why it matters

SPICED comes from Winning by Design and was built for recurring-revenue businesses, where the sale is the start of the customer relationship rather than the end. The information gathered in discovery is meant to carry through to onboarding and renewal, not only to the close.

The five elements:

  • Situation: the buyer’s context and current setup.
  • Pain: the problem they want solved.
  • Impact: what solving it is worth, rational and emotional.
  • Critical event: a date with a consequence, after which the problem gets more expensive.
  • Decision: how and by whom the decision is made.

The critical event is what sets SPICED apart. A deal without one tends to drift, because nothing forces a choice this quarter rather than next.

Example

On a discovery call with a B2B software company, the head of sales describes the situation and the pain: new reps take months to ramp. At 19:25 the rep asks, “Is there a date that makes this more urgent?” The answer: “We hire twelve reps in January, and I cannot onboard them the way we do today.”

That is the critical event: a fixed date with a clear cost if it passes. The rep follows up on impact (“What does a quarter of slow ramp cost you?”) and decision (“Who besides you signs off?”). The deal now has a reason to close before January.

How Drummer handles it

Drummer scores every discovery call against a SPICED scorecard automatically. Each element gets a verdict, the reasoning and the timestamp where the buyer said it, so a manager sees immediately which deals have no critical event. The rep’s AI twin writes the elements back to the CRM, where the customer success team can find them later.

Use the SPICED scorecard template, or compare it with the discovery call template.

Give every rep a day back, starting next week.

Thirty minutes, on your own calls and your own CRM. No migration, nothing for your reps to learn.
