    Problem

    Listen for

    • Questions about what goes wrong or takes too long
    • The buyer naming a difficulty
    • Follow-up on a specific example

    Implication

    Listen for

    • Effects on revenue, cost, customers or people
    • Knock-on effects in other teams

    Need-payoff

    Listen for

    • Questions about how a solution would help
    • The buyer describing the benefits
    • Value tied back to the implications raised
    What good sounds like
If your planners had that information before the call, what would that change for them?

A call scored against this template

Drummer scores every call against the template you choose. Each criterion gets its reasoning and the moment in the call that proves it, so a manager checks the evidence in seconds instead of listening to the whole call.

About this template

SPIN selling comes from Neil Rackham’s research into what successful salespeople do in large sales, published in the book SPIN Selling in 1988. Its finding was that the questions a rep asks matter more than the pitch, and that they follow a sequence: Situation, Problem, Implication and Need-payoff. The SPIN selling glossary entry has the short definition.

Use this scorecard on discovery calls in larger B2B sales. SPIN is a questioning method rather than a qualification checklist, so many teams combine it with a qualification scorecard such as MEDDIC: SPIN for how the rep asks, MEDDIC for what the rep needs to know.

How does Drummer score a call against SPIN?

Drummer scores each question type of every recorded call from 0 to 3, with its reasoning and a timestamp that jumps to the moment in the call. Because SPIN is about sequence, the timestamps show whether the rep built from problem to implication or jumped straight to the product. A manager can open a comment thread on that moment. It works on Dutch, French and German calls as well as English ones. More on coaching.

Pair the score with the conversation metrics: a strong SPIN call usually has a high question rate and long customer stories, because the buyer does most of the talking.

Questions about this template

What is a SPIN scorecard?

A SPIN scorecard scores a discovery call on the four question types of SPIN selling: situation, problem, implication and need-payoff. Each gets a score from 0 to 3 and a weight. It shows a manager whether the rep moved the conversation from facts to consequences to value, or stopped at the facts and started pitching too early.

How do you weight SPIN criteria?

This template puts the weight on implication and need-payoff, 30 points each, because those questions build the case in the buyer's mind. Problem gets 25 and situation 15, for a total of 100. Situation stays low on purpose: too many fact-finding questions bore a buyer. Teams adjust the weights per call type.

Can Drummer score our calls against our own version?

Yes. Upload your own criteria and weights, or start from this template and edit it. Drummer scores every recorded call against your version, with its reasoning and a timestamp per criterion. A manager clicks through to the exact question the rep asked, or the moment one was missing, and leaves a comment on it.
