What is the Challenger sale?

Definition

The Challenger sale is a sales methodology from Matthew Dixon and Brent Adamson in which reps teach buyers a new insight about their business, tailor it to each stakeholder and take control of the sale.

Why it matters

Matthew Dixon and Brent Adamson published The Challenger Sale in 2011, based on research at CEB into the profiles of sales reps and how they perform. Their argument: in complex B2B sales, the reps who win are not the ones who build the warmest relationships, but the ones who change how the buyer thinks about their own business.

The method rests on three skills:

  • Teach: bring an insight the buyer did not have, about a cost, risk or opportunity.
  • Tailor: adapt that message to what each stakeholder cares about, from finance to operations.
  • Take control: be direct about money, next steps and the decision, instead of waiting.

It suits markets where buyers already know the product category and have done their research. The rep has to add something the website did not.

Example

A rep selling to a logistics company opens a call with the transport manager. At 04:10, instead of asking about pain, the rep says, “Fleets like yours often lose more margin on empty return trips than anyone has measured. Do you know what yours cost?” The manager admits they have not.

At 21:30, after the manager agrees it is worth a look, the rep takes control: “Your finance director will want this in euros. Can we put thirty minutes with her in the calendar for next week, and I bring the numbers from your own routes?”

How Drummer handles it

Drummer scores every call against a Challenger scorecard automatically: did the rep bring an insight, tailor it to the stakeholder and agree a concrete next step. Each criterion gets the reasoning and a timestamp, so a manager can play the moment the teaching landed or the moment the rep backed off on price.

Use the Challenger scorecard template, or see how scores feed coaching on the coaching page.

Give every rep a day back, starting next week.

Thirty minutes, on your own calls and your own CRM. No migration, nothing for your reps to learn.
