What is sales coaching?

Definition

Sales coaching is the ongoing work of a manager helping individual reps improve specific skills and behaviours, based on what actually happened in their calls and deals rather than on results alone.

Why it matters

Quota attainment tells a manager who is behind. It does not tell them why. Coaching works on the why: the discovery question a rep never asks, the demo that runs long, the next step that is never agreed. Those are habits, and habits change with specific feedback, repeated, close to the moment it happened.

The practical problem is time. A manager with eight reps cannot listen to every call, so coaching drifts towards the deals that are already in trouble and the reps who ask for help. The reps in the middle, where most of the gain usually is, get the least attention.

Example

On Monday a sales manager opens the rep overview. One rep’s discovery calls show a rising talk-to-listen ratio over three weeks and a scorecard that keeps missing the decision process. The manager picks one call, jumps to 22:15 where the rep answers the customer’s question about timing with a product feature, and comments on that moment: “Next time ask who else signs off before you answer.” The rep replies in the thread, and in Thursday’s call the question comes up at 08:40.

How Drummer handles it

Drummer scores every call against the scorecards your team already uses (MEDDIC, MEDDPICC, BANT, SPIN, SPICED, Challenger or your own), with the reasoning and the timestamp per criterion. Six conversation metrics, among them the talk-to-listen ratio and longest monologue, are compared with benchmarks per call type and shown as On track, Worth a look or Focus area.

Managers comment on exact moments in a call, reps reply and resolve, and the rep overview compares reps and tracks trends. Coaching becomes a weekly routine instead of a quarterly review. See coaching in Drummer and coaching field sales teams.

Give every rep a day back, starting next week.

Thirty minutes, on your own calls and your own CRM. No migration, nothing for your reps to learn.
